Short Bio:
The carbon cathode used for aluminium electrolysis may appear very dense and impenetrable. However, after 4 years of service it contains 35 wt % salts. This in spite of that the porosity at the start is about 20 %. The reactions start with penetration of metallic Na followed by molten Na3AlF6 and NaF. Products that forms and partly disappears are NaCN, AlN, NaAlO2, Na2O.11Al2O3, AlC4 and Na5Al3F14.
